Improving the quality of primary education in Northern Nepal.
We help children learn in an environment which is safe, meaningful, worthwhile and fun.
The Nepal Education Foundation (nef) supports small, government primary schools in remote, mountainous parts of Nepal. Since 2002, we have helped children learn in environments that are safe, meaningful, worthwhile and fun.
By making small improvements across many schools, we improve attendance, raise attainment and support continued progression through the education system.
Supporting Schools Where it Matters Most
Strong schools depend on confident teachers, engaged parents and practical support. When teachers have the skills, resources and backing they need, children are better able to learn, be creative and progress. Equally, when parents believe in the value of education, attendance improves and attitudes shift.
The Nepal Education Foundation is a UK-based education charity supporting primary education in remote and underserved communities in Nepal through our long-term, practical BUILD, EQUIP, TEACH approach.
Practical Infrastructure That Supports Learning
Government primary schools in remote Himalayan settings face practical challenges, including access to safe buildings, clean water and sanitation. The Nepal Education Foundation supports small, targeted infrastructure projects such as classrooms, water pipes and toilets, working with communities to improve essential facilities. These interventions create safe, functional environments where children can attend school regularly and learn with dignity.
Structured Resources That Build Literacy and Confidence
Schools often lack basic learning materials, libraries and educational resources. Many children speak Tamang or Sherpa languages at home, while the national curriculum is taught in Nepali, creating additional barriers to learning.
The nef equips schools with libraries and learning resources that are structured by age and ability, aligned to the national curriculum, and designed to support literacy progression. This helps children engage with reading, build confidence, and progress at their own pace.
Training and Coaching That Strengthen Classroom Practice
High-quality teacher training and in-school support are critical, yet access is limited in remote areas. The nef provides culturally sensitive teacher training alongside in-school coaching, helping teachers build confidence, skills and consistency in the classroom. When teachers feel supported, learning outcomes improve.
We work with schools over the long term, and the results are clear. Since 2018, girls’ enrolment has increased significantly, reception class attendance has risen from 50% to 85% across the schools we support, and over time the vast majority of pupils now progress to secondary education, compared with fewer than half in 2015.
Empowerment & accountability underpin our approach, ensuring our impact is sustainable.
We work with local government and engage local parents to ensure our interventions are relevant and sustainable. By working with School Management Committees (SMC) and Village Development Committees (VDC), parents are encouraged to take ownership of education provision and hold the government (including teachers) to account.
Helping parents manage a Child’s education impacts student and teacher attendance, as well as reducing isolation and improving the social capital of parents.
